LJI’s laboratories are led by 22 distinguished faculty, each laboratory runs independently under the direction of one faculty member, known as the principal investigator. Although not a degree-granting institution, the Institute plays a major role in training scientists, including graduate students and postdoctoral trainees from around the world. Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows work under the mentorship of faculty members and their research projects are supported by baccalaureate level technicians and undergraduate lab assistants.

Social activities —ranging from monthly happy hours and our annual LJI Family Padres Game day at Petco Park to a Halloween costume contest and an annual holiday party—are just some of the ways in which La Jolla Institute interacts as a community.
In addition to employment opportunities, the Institute provides outreach experiences for volunteers and interns who have an interest in fields related to biomedical studies. These experiences help young people develop their technical abilities and gain practical training in a laboratory setting.
